Please note this is not a Triplet Hound or Tempo. The tone generator is as powerful as the Tempo (I tested it with it), but the probe is not as powerful as the more expensive ones. It's essentially a radio tuned to a wide bandwidth, not an inductive amplifier. I was hoping it would be as good as a more expensive toner/probe with fewer features, but no. This is good for phone lines. I've run over 1000 feet with it and it has worked perfectly every time. Bottom Line: If you're replacing Cat 5 and Cat 6, spend the extra $$ and buy something more expensive, like Fox and Hound or Tempo/Greenlee. Their probes have much better amps and filters, so they cost more so you don't have to spend time putting your ear to the speaker. Update: If you want to boost the 5/6 category lines, here's what you need to do. Take an RJ45 connector and connect a pair with 2 holes of different colors EXCEPT BROWN (it's a pair for Poe so don't use brown wires), connect it to the drop and use alligator clips. I usually use wires 2 and 4 (solid orange and solid blue). So the sound is applied to a pair that is not connected at the other end, there is no continuity even if it is connected to a switch. This will CLEARLY increase the signal and thus the performance of the probes to a good level. Professional probes are still louder, but this can come at the cost of toning.
