I used this product as soon as I received it. I bought the small version. I have a moderate amount of brown diatoms growing on the tank walls and plants. I intend to use it with a 15 gallon Fluval Flex tank and originally intended to leave it hanging in the tank between uses. The first thing I noticed is that it sticks to the glass walls of the tank pretty well. The Fluval Flex glass tank I have has a straight top and bottom. The back is a wall separating the built in tubs from the rest of the tank, so a magnet can't be used there as I can't get my hand in that area. So I still have to clean it with a styrofoam block on a stick. The sides are perfect for these magnets as they easily slide through both parts of this vacuum. The front is an arch that curves vertically instead of horizontally as usual. Had no problems with these magnetic cleaner halves as the tool stuck to the glass just as well inside and out. I prefer the small, closed handle. This made a firm grip less necessary. Other similar magnetic cleaners I've had only had a plastic tab for hanging. I can't tell you how many times I've dropped those outer halves of the magnet first and then had the inner 6 inches fall off the inner glass and still had to get my hands and arms wet to pick up the falling half. This magnetic cleaner does not have this problem. The grip on this one is a closed loop so it completely surrounds your fingers. It's much more comfortable to hold a handle. But even if you accidentally detach the outer part from the tank wall, it stays on your fingers while the inner part floats to the top of the tank. Removal is often as simple as simply placing the outer magnet on the glass wall, and the inner portion will float up and reattach. Ready to clean up again. In addition, the shape of the inner half is well rounded and can be gently pushed behind plants or decorations without damaging them. However, be careful about when and where you put the halves back together. Sometimes the two pieces come together fairly quickly with a click when one half is in the water and moving quickly to rejoin the outer half. Make sure there are no fish, snails or plants in between. They could crush a shrimp or small snail and injure or kill small fish. Most of the time the fish still hate being brushed with this cleaner and stay away from it. Most of my fish are sure that that horrible thing moving around in their tank is a predator that will eat them. But I also have lucky lucky fish, like my cooley loaches bumping into fan blades just to see what it's like. So make sure to relieve your aquarium when cleaning. Cut plants can be broken or cut. So slow down when brushing near plants. When you are outside the tank, the two pieces stay together thanks to the magnetic force between them. You can even hang it on a hook to air dry after use as it has a closed handle. Makes storage nice and easy. This is now the only reason I took two stars off the rating. The velvet side that slides over the glass can wash away light water stains and fingerprints on the outside. This soft, velvety material is unlikely to break your glass. However, the interior cleaner uses tiny plastic loops made of a material designed to scrape away algae and the like. I don't think it scratches anything very well. As mentioned above, brown diatoms grow in my aquarium as I like the aquarium to be lit for too long. But brown diatoms are generally easy to clean. A light swipe with almost any material is all it takes and it breaks off and hits the water and then it kills my UV filter in my swamp. Even the movement of a finger can erase it. But this cleaner doesn't clean everything well, including those brown diatoms. I have an internal magnet that moves back and forth across the material on the glass. I could see it left a few marks, but it just won't erase. It doesn't have enough surface material on the glass to get it. So any other goodies I like are canceled out by the fact that he didn't clean up well at all. It needed something else for that, besides the little plastic loops that were attached to it. I tentatively attached a thin sponge cloth to the inside with a rubber band between the hooks and the glass. Cleaning was much better with the cloth. Then I removed the rag and applied a piece of lightly abrasive sponge. Then I cleaned it up nicely. So be prepared to put your own cleaning supplies on the inner half if you want it to really clean glass walls. If using this on acrylic tanks make sure you don't use an abrasive as acrylic scratches easily. The company that makes this should use a better cleaning material than the plastic hinges they use now. These loops just don't clean well. And I've also found that what it cleans stays in those little loops when they're taken out of the tank. It's difficult to remove from loops at best. If you leave this in the tank's water, the things you've cleaned will no doubt grow on top of the vacuum. Again, using your own cloth material means you can just toss the rag or sponge when it gets too dirty and replace it with cheap materials. to make it really clean as it should be. But as it is, it won't clean up well until you change it.
