Review on πŸͺ΅ Bosch HCS008 Edge Wood Piece: Enhancing Woodworking Precision and Versatility by Andrew Britton

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Functional but frustrating and a bit dangerous

I tried these because I thought they were from Bosch and they seemed cheap enough. There weren't any other reviews. Well they basically are "OK" but with some BIG warnings. I just drilled some large 2.5" holes in 3/4" plywood for the recessed LED lights on the shelf. I used a traditional spring loaded hole saw of minor Quality used with about 10 concentric blades at the base. This tool was mediocre but did the job so I looked for the best kit.Anyway I drilled 5 holes so I knew what it looked like. This task was fresh in my mind for comparison Bosch wasn't faster at all BUT it was much, much more dangerous as the blade cut in and d suddenly snatched the drill out of my hand. The first time was a surprise, but even if you were prepared for it, it happened twice more; with three tips that have teeth it really does cut a lot if the bit is angled at all. On the third, he tore the circuit board from the workpiece clamps. It's really very sensitive, and when tilted, it bites quickly and completely. Perhaps this tool should only be used on a drill press. Then there was the cut quality. I am attaching an image showing a cut off Bosch plywood connector on the left and a cut out of a "regular" serrated blade connector on the right. As you can see, the Bosch was a lot more ragged around the edge. You may or may not care, but when it comes down to it, as I've used for spring-loaded downlights, Bosch definitely produces a more casual and much less sophisticated cut. The maximum depth of cut isn't published anywhere, by the way, but it looks like it might be a bit more than my 3/4" plywood. Possibly 1 to 1 inch.
