This 6ft Frost King heating cable works exactly as it should! I have a pipe that has frozen and cracked twice in 10 years in an unheated basement. . As you can see from the photos, on my recent renovation I placed the pipe 2 inches from the outside wall and used heavier gauge L-type copper pipe. Frost King's heating cable was very flexible (after I tested and warmed it up) and could easily be tied to the pipe every 3.5 to 4 inches. After it was tied to the pipe I cut off the tie tails and covered the pipe and heating cable with Frost King Cotton Pipe Insulation. I then covered the coil of cotton insulation with aluminum tape to keep out the bugs and critters the cotton might attract. Frost King's cotton insulation has an A fire rating, so I'm not concerned about the safety of this setup. especially with the aluminum oven tape on it. When I first tried to test the heating cable by cooling the sensor with ice packs for 10-15 minutes, the cable broke. it didn't heat up and my Kill-A-Watt meter showed no power consumption. Then I thought that the heating cable and sensor, which had been sitting in my garage in over 90 degrees during the day, might be too warm inside to activate, even with ice packs surrounding the sensor. So I put a heating cable in my fridge for 45 minutes to cool everything down to my average basement temperature for the winter. I then laid the chilled cable on a tabletop, covered the sensor with ice packs, and wrapped it in a towel (just part of the sensor) to let the cold work. Within 10 minutes the wattmeter showed that the cable was drawing 42 watts. I let the cord warm up for another 20 minutes to see how hot it gets and still feel comfortable in my hand. After I removed the ice packs, the cable disconnected in less than 8 minutes in a 70 degree kitchen. So this cable is slower to respond to sudden temperature changes than I thought it would be, but it works exactly as it should as it's just keeping water flowing and preventing ice damage.
