(Update: Failed after 1 year) Perfect for 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Update January 2019: I installed them in November 2017 and wrote a positive review. But in December 2018 they stopped holding the hood. I decided to try another brand which turned out to be identical to Boxi except for the packaging. Probably from the same factory. This way I could use the same balls/cleats I previously installed for the Boxi racks to attach the new ones. After removing the boxis I found that only one boxis brace had failed and the other was not enough to hold the hood up on its own. So now I have a spare shelf. BTW, to remove those boxi racks or similar, use a small screwdriver to pry the metal strap around the end of the rack (or just remove the strap completely). This will release it inside where it will grab the ball/stud you installed when you removed the original factory struts (which are much more difficult to remove, see description below). Here is the brand I bought to replace Boxi. I can't tell if it's gotten any better as it looks identical. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FFGD802/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (original review): Fits 2005 Toyota 4Runner with no problems. Total install time for both is probably 30 minutes. Removing the old posts/supports is probably the hardest part, but not too bad once you figure it all out. I used an adjustable wrench as I didn't have the right size for the (metric?) screws. Both ends unscrewed and removed. I suggest using a 2x4 (or a very reliable person!) to open the hood while you remove the jambs. I removed one, replaced it and then made another but wasn't sure if the 1 post would be able to hold up the hood on its own. The studs on the factory pistons are permanently attached to the steering knuckles, so when you loosen both ends everything comes out as a unit. On the other hand, Boxi posts have a bolt that you screw in and then easily and securely insert the post at each end. I attached the bottom, then I had to rotate the top of the rack about a quarter turn to line it up with the top rack. No mistake. Great design and nice tight closure when you drop the hood.

Pros
  • Ideal for small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors
