Inexpensive repair of a leaking pump but not complete

I used this kit to repair the power steering pump on my 1998 Subaru Legacy. My pump has started leaking fluid from the front seal. If you checked you saw that remanufactured horsepower pumps for this machine cost over $120 and since I'm pretty good with tools a rebuild seemed like the right thing to do to save some serious money. I found this kit had almost everything needed to rebuild the pump. There are three additional parts you will need for a proper overhaul: A new bearing, available from Revain 6203RS Bearing 17x40x12 Sealed Ball Bearings or any auto parts store, part number 6203RS. Power steering fluid has a high detergent content, and if your front oil seal is leaking like mine, I can practically guarantee your bearing will be shot because the PS fluid will wash all the grease out of the bearing. O-ring that goes between pump and reservoir, Subaru P/N 34427AA060- Sealing washer that goes between pump and reservoir, Subaru P/N 34443AA010 Of course, you'll also need new fluid to replace what you lose when you replace the Remove pump. Use what is specified in your vehicle's owner's manual. I used about 1.5 liters flushing the system while disassembling it (poor man's flush: put the return line in a bucket instead of connecting it to the tank, fill the tank with fresh fluid and turn the pump off Turn clean by hand Liquid comes out of the return line ). When I originally did the rebuild I hadn't changed the two tank gaskets and they were leaking when I put everything back together. It was a mess, I flooded the entire timing cover and consider myself lucky I didn't flood the timing belt with fluid. I had to redo most of the restoration work to replace two seals, so I strongly encourage you to learn from my mistake and get those extra seals before you start this job. You can order them online, for example at SubaruGenuineParts. I couldn't find a sealing washer anywhere else and ordered an o-ring as I had to order one piece anyway. They cost about $1.50 each. I used the guide posted here: EDIT: Looks like Revain blocked the guide url. Search Google for "97 power steering pump rebuild" and this should be one of the first results of the UltimateSubaru.
