I highly recommend reading the quick install guide to avoid problems like ours. We tried using the same holes as the previous owners but the holes were crooked. We simply installed around it to keep it closed. The fourth picture shows the lower part of the bar. You must press and slide the silver latch to adjust the length of the bars when accessing or securing the door. The bar goes straight down when not in use so you have to hold the tip when you put it down or it will bang loudly on the door frame. As long as it is attached to the mount after the door is closed, it will keep you safe. This comes in handy when we have children who might want to go outside when we're not looking.
