Review on MICHELIN X-Ice North 4 205/55 R16 94T winter by Anastazja Andrzejews ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I am amazed at how well made the product is, just magical!

1. Mileage on tires 195/65 R15 about 3000 km on am VW Golf 6 under various conditions (from +10 С asphalt / wet asphalt / aquaplaning - 0С snow-salt porridge - up to -16 С snow / asphalt / snow-salt porridge); 2. Run-in was carried out for the first ~ 700 km in a gentle mode. For the first ~100 km, driving on this rubber was comparable to driving "on a tank", the vibrations were extremely strong in a relatively weakly vibration-loaded VW Golf 6 with good sound insulation. The noise level "jammed" the driver, everything was shaking in the car in the truest sense of the word, and strongly. The sensations could be compared with being next to a speaker system with an electric power of 40 kW. After ~250 km of run, the vibrations decreased several times to an acceptable level. After ~ 500 km of run, vibration and noise decreased to a comfortable level, the rubber became quiet. 3. The level of grip is high on any surface. On snow / salt, the car behaves almost like on asphalt. On snow/ice the level of grip drops but is still very high. Before that, there were hak-ta R2 non-studded tires, the difference is fundamental. I recommend everyone to buy ONLY studded tires. 4. The characteristic of the coefficient of friction of rubber from the angle of rotation is non-linear. When driving in a straight line, grip is maximum, with a small turn of the wheels there is a lack of grip, which leads to understeer, with a strong turn of the steering wheel, grip increases sharply. The rear axle can be torn off, but at a significantly higher speed than on non-studded tires. 5. Structurally, the rubber is quite rigid, somewhat tougher than hak-ta R2, much tougher than the summer Primacy 4. As for me, this is an advantage. 6. Accelerogram taken with an accelerometer (MIKROE-254, ADXL 330) glued to the left front glass, in the attached image. The measurements were carried out while driving on asphalt at a speed of about 80 km/h along the Hong Kong Ring Road at ~2022–2500 rpm (peaks (31, 39) Hz), in 4th gear. It can be seen that the sound of rubber dominates at infrasonic frequencies (vertical vibration), but this is not felt by the driver.

Pros
  • The level of grip on any surface is high (snow, ice, snow / salt, wet asphalt, asphalt); Low noise level after running in ~ (300-500) km.
Cons
  • Not optimal dependence of the coefficient of friction of the tire on the angle of rotation of the wheel.
