It was not said to ground the GPIO0 pin.

. I had to ground GPIO0 to charge it. Although this fact was obvious in the esp8266 data sheet, everyone here claims its plug and play without mentioning it. So it hit me. I gave it three stars as something like this should have a QA. I would save newbies so much time.
