Review on Steelex D1024 3 Forstner Drill Bit by Duane Kerr

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A very good beat for the money when used correctly.

Forstner bits are made for slowly making really nice finished holes, not for ripping wood. They are designed to spin at a few hundred RPM, not thousands, and should not be forced - other reviews complain that the bit will "burn out" or dull quickly, use the bit incorrectly. I just made 174 holes in 1/2" thick MDF with a 2 1/8" drill bit and can't see any difference between the first hole and the last. I used a 620rpm drill press and took my time - each hole probably took 15-20 seconds. No burning, big holes and the bit is still good and sharp. Is that a Rolex bit? no The blade had some minor manufacturing defects, but it turned properly on my drill press and the holes were very good. I gave it 4 stars for durability as I'd happily try one with a better carbide edge and would probably spend a little more money on it if I had to do it again, but with careful use I have no doubt it will last a bit becomes years. If you need to cut holes quickly, buy a self-propelling drill bit - it's designed to cut through wood and withstand abuse.
