Review on πŸ”§ Gas Spout - Upgraded Replacement Spout and Cap for Pre-2009 Gas Cans and Water Jugs (White or Black Set) by Jeremiah Vishwasrao

Great spout, but beware of a design flaw

A great way to circumvent those stupid new (and useless) gas spouts, but it has one major drawback - the rubber gasket that seals the can spout is very thin and will twist and tear if you twist the nose very hard. In fact, it doesn't take much torque at all to break the seal - I tightened it just enough to keep the gasses from the tank from getting into my car and that was all it took to destroy the seal . The problem is that the gasket is a single piece with a U-shaped cross-section that fits over the outside edge of the spout flange, thereby sealing the top and bottom of the flange (which is also smaller than it should be, but that's another Matter). This is an effective solution for sealing the spout, but it means that no matter what you do, tightening the lid will result in the lid grabbing the top of the gasket and twisting it sideways, applying full torque to the gasket instead applied to the spout. and the gasket simply isn't rated for such side loading, let alone the intensity that can occur when tightening the cap of a gas cylinder. The incorrect torque then causes a very thin seal to rupture, resulting in a large leak in the outlet. This is a serious design flaw that can make the spout dangerous. Once ruptured, the seal is useless and both vapor and liquid will leak out of the spout. I ended up going to the hardware store and found a heavier rubber pipe gasket in the plumbing department which turned out to be just right and which held the spout in place and allowed it to close tightly, although the too small flange on the spout still makes it kind of seal iffy. However, this fixed the problem. I think all it takes to fix this design flaw is to make the flange bigger and thicker and use a simple gasket that only seals the bottom of the flange (the part that seals the spout of the glass) or add a teflon washer. which fits between the cap and the top of the gasket, allowing the lid to rotate without grabbing the gasket and tearing it - after all, there's no need to seal the top of the spout flange as the bottom is the only side that creates the Poetry. So by all means use this grommet as an alternative to the flawed grommets being made these days, but be careful about the sensitivity of the pads and be prepared to buy a better pad if this design flaw eventually resurfaces (and so on). it will eventually be).

Pros
  • This is great
Cons
  • Some flaws
