Functionally they are excellent in every respect, but stupid because of the use case. It is clear that none of those who developed/sold them ever used them. If you expect the stand to be "where they live" on your table, you'll want a lid on the bottom (to keep the salt/pepper off the table) as part of the holder so you can easily grab the grinder. (with ONE hand, great advantage) and use it. Instead, you need two hands, one for removing the bottom cover. This eliminates the main benefit. Everyone starts using them, doesn't get any of these, and (usually) realizes there's a lid at the bottom, then says "that's stupid" since they have to pour the contents of the lid over the food (like a normal shaker). I think it would be even cheaper to put a plastic pallet in the holder. Stupid stupid stupidity.
