Very good use: heating, cooling and air quality

We have been burning LOTS of wood in our regular fireplace for 25 years but have just gotten tired of all the work with a real fireplace; Chop wood, get kindling, start a fire, start a fire, move logs, regulate airflow, open a window, turn on the ceiling fan, then clear the ashes, and so on. So we didn't use it for years and ended up seeing a black hole in our chimney. I was thinking of switching to gas but didn't want to spend money because it would be a complicated gas line installation. Was visiting Seattle and saw a dimplex in a condo. Never seen it before and was very impressed. looked real So, back in Chicago, I examined the fireplace inserts. I looked at videos on YouTube, reviews and various manufacturers. Reviews for the Dimplex were very positive, but a fully enclosed Dimplex insert with glass doors would cost around a thousand dollars. It was really more than I wanted to spend. Then I thought of just putting the logs on the grate, almost did it. Then I found df12310, about three hundred dollars. That was better for the budget. What I didn't understand was the meaning of the mirrored back. This insert has a glass panel, a mirror that is on the back and reflects the flame. It adds realism. If I had only bought one set of magazines, I wouldn't have. It looks amazing. Easy enough to install. I had to remove my current fireplace screen with sliding doors. Then I just plugged it in, routed the cord from the right side, tucked it behind my old fireplace screen, and reinstalled my old fireplace screen. Put the weird looking battery in the remote control - it has an on button and an off button. I turned on the button and it looks like a real fire that I burned for two hours. No roaring flames, but definitely realistic flames and glowing logs. Since I don't use it for heating, I can't comment on that. I always keep my glass doors in my fireplace closed to keep out drafts and there's always a chance of a stupid squirrel or raccoon crawling down my chimney (which two squirrels did a few years ago, I don't want to do that again) . The convenience of just pressing a button and turning it on is great, especially in the mornings. I don't have to do my best to start the wood, I just push the button and turn it on. I was surprised it was shipped by USPS and not UPS or Fed Ex given the mirrored glass on the back. The US Postal Service delivered the box to me in perfect condition, but I saw how the glass could break. The packaging is good but not very strong. Very happy and hope my comments can help someone considering this. One more thing, since I already have a fireplace, I didn't have to worry about buying a "sideless" firebox. I didn't need the side panels that the $1000 insert comes with since my fireplace already has side panels. I also think the difference between the df12309 and the df12310 is that the 12310 has pulsing LEDs in the logs which add to the realism. Hope these comments help.
