This is definitely a job that a handyman can do with his own hands and not have to pay anyone to do it. Check your engine specs and make sure the two washers will fit the two bolts you need to remove to drain the transmission oil from the lower block. It's a cheap insurance policy that seals well when you retighten the bolts. Also, put the old gear oil in a plastic container for a day and see if the old oil separates. If you see a layer of water, water has entered the bottom block, which you should get repaired immediately by a professional, or you can do it yourself if you feel comfortable enough changing pads.
