They are plastic and not as strong but do the job I used them for. I mainly used them to hold the railing in place while installing the aluminum balisters between them. It would be difficult to hold the 2x4 headrail while installing the balisters. They held the top of the 2x4 in place and I was able to tap the railing up or down just enough to get the balisters in between the railing. I then nailed the deck screws to the outside of the 2x4 railing and countersunk the screws below the surface, then patched and painted. The brackets also gave my railing a more finished look. I would not use them as structural support, they are purely decorative in my opinion.
