Filter media too thick. Immediately after installation I noticed a 15% drop in airflow from the registers. In just three weeks, the filter collected a thin layer of dust, resulting in over-restriction of the air. The air conditioning stopped blowing and the evaporator coil froze. Everything is solved by disconnecting/defrosting the evaporator coil and replacing it with a disposable filter. It's not just this filter - washable, lifetime filters are notorious for causing these problems, and in some cases worse. Basically, they have to be too thick to do their job of blocking allergens and improving air quality. Positive: The metal filter cage can be opened and the filter material can be removed. With some refinement/manufacturing, the material can be replaced with a less restrictive, washable filter media (see True Blue or Air Handler). Ultimately, the question arises: are you willing to put in the necessary work to get a washable filter for life? Won't that destroy your air conditioner?
