Review on πŸ“Ά DPC2100 High-Speed Cable Modem, Compliant with DOCSIS 2.0 Standards by Stephen Ball

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Compact and efficient

I get just over 3Mbps with this modem, which is all I pay for and need. It does not support the higher speeds of DOCSIS 3.0 (it is a DOCSIS 2.0 modem). I like its compact design as it sits on my desk next to my computer. I like that the transmit/receive data lights flash to indicate data is being transmitted since most newer models are on all the time. I guess I prefer just blinking lights. This modem is smaller than my Netgear router that I use for WiFi and sits on top of it. It gives off very little heat. I'm really happy with the price and the size. Another nice feature is that it also offers a USB connection to your computer. The modem I had before I bought the DPC2100 allowed USB, but only Ethernet or USB. The DPC2100 (according to the documentation - USB I have yet to try) allows you to connect via both an ethernet port and a USB port. It's good if you have an old computer without an ethernet adapter and want to use an ethernet connection for a router, for example. The good thing is that you have two outputs that can be used at the same time. But I don't think I'll ever use a USB connection. Very satisfied. UPDATE (March 7th, 2014): I have learned that this modem has a security vulnerability that could render the modem inoperable. I contacted Time Warner through their online forums and contacted a manager who was able to update my firmware and effectively fix the vulnerability. The firmware can only be updated by your cable provider and must be requested by you in order to be transferred to your modem. I feel a lot better knowing that I have the latest drivers for my hardware and that I'm much less likely to be the victim of a malicious website attack. Just remember that the firmware needs to be updated.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • I have doubts
