Review on D-Link ANT24-0230 Xtreme N 2.4GHz Indoor Wi-Fi Antenna by Zachary Caldwell

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Slightly better than the best wireless hotspots

I recently switched my router, which required replacing one of my Windows 7 64-bit computers from wired to wireless. The desktop is now in the basement on the opposite side of the house from the router, which is on the first floor. Although the vertical distance between them is small, there are some obstacles (such as air ducts, etc.). I installed a D-Link DWA-556 Xtreme N PCI Express Desktop Adapter and showed three bars of connection status and RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) 68 with inSSIDer. I also have a D-Link DIR-655 Extreme-N Gigabit WiFi router. I bought an ANT24-0230 and decided to use it with a WiFi adapter rather than trying to extend the range of my router. After reading the review, I realized that my results might not be that impressive, but I figured any improvement is better than none. I got an improvement, but I wouldn't call it impressive. Three bars jumped to four and the RSSI dropped to 58. The improvement is certainly something I'm not unhappy with, but I'm glad I decided to buy it used and at a lower price than retail. comparisons; I have a 300Mbps 802.11b/g/n high gain Wi-Fi N wireless network adapter with 2 5dBi high gain dipole antennas - 6x better signal reception and 3x faster speed on Desktop XP located on the second floor. When the router was in the basement, I got five bars and an RSSI of 28. When the router was on the first floor, the RSSI dropped to 18.
