Only time will tell but I was certainly glad to find an RKX vacuum pump gasket replacement kit for a 2.5 liter VW engine! This seems like all there is to fixing an oil leak in a vacuum pump to me, and it's definitely worth trying instead of replacing the $200+ VW recommended pump. The pump itself is a little tricky to remove and reinstall, but that's not a big deal if the car has a manual transmission. There is a little more work to be done on the automatic but someone figured out how to do it without resetting the transmission as would be necessary with a new pump and following VW's repair procedure. RKX includes some very basic instructions with the kit, but they link to a great step-by-step video of the entire repair on their website. My only suggestion for improvement, which may be completely unreasonable; It would be nice if a new pump pad was included in the kit. I've heard speculation that a possible cause of the seal failure is due to the dissimilar metals used for the pump housing and pump cover, and that VW 'might' fix this fault in their replacement pumps. Sounds plausible, but I really don't know. My 2007 Jetta's "imperfect" design lasted 12 years and over 130,000 miles; If the RKX kit lasts even a quarter of the time, it's worth it!
