Between the bottle and the tray is a piece with very small holes that the water filters through, but I regularly clog too much to flow on its own and I have to manually tip the product in to get that refill compartment. I tried removing the filter completely, but after a few days the dirt leaked out and without the filter it floated into the bottle and contaminated all the water so I put the filter back in. While it's a bummer. that I have to manually tip my water bottle every day instead of relying on a constant water supply for my lizard, I have no regrets about the purchase. Still, tipping a bottle every day is more convenient than taking out and filling a bowl every day.
