Review on πŸ”§ AmazonCommercial Pocket Compact Digital Multimeter with NCV, CATII 600V - 2000 Count by Ryan Gilliam

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent value for money, essential tool

I accidentally erased my previous analog multimeter. I left the multimeter in resistance measurement mode. So the final test was to measure the active outlet. Ouch! Instant History Multimeter. Well, I really liked the analog readout on my old multimeter. But in the short time I've had this new one I liked the digital display of this gauge as the numbers are a good size and easier to read. Also, this new counter fits very nicely in my main tool bag (which I almost always carry first when starting any size job). It takes up space in your pocket because it's smaller - literally the size of your palm. The feature I really appreciate is the voltage proximity indicator. Without touching a physically bare wire, I can place the top of the meter (not the probes) in close proximity to a live electrical wire or outlet, and when active, the orange LED on the top of the meter will illuminate. I also appreciate that the probes have removable pods. So if you are testing between many circuits/wires, don't accidentally draw power from the wrong wire or circuit. However, they can be removed so that the wires can be checked in a regular outlet. Two caveats: First, the gauge uses a special battery. It's a 12 volt battery that looks almost like a cut AAA battery. About 2/3 the height of AAA. I have never seen these before. I would recommend purchasing a set of five of these batteries with the meter. Avoid hanging around because the meter won't turn on. I've had the meter for a few months now, but I haven't replaced the battery yet. However, I don't use it all the time. Thing is, I can't go to the corner store and find a replacement battery. So I stocked up. It would be nice if Revain added battery status to the display. My second caveat: This display doesn't have a backlight. I would recommend a blue light like some digital watches. Obviously, this type of lighting really saves battery life. The lack of a backlight is my biggest complaint. And that's really a shame. The lack of a backlight prevents me from giving this meter five stars. It's still a good gauge. But the lack of a backlight detracts from the otherwise good value. This is very bad. Otherwise, it's a damn good deal!
