Review on Wera 05004018001 Zyklop Metric Ratchet by David Jennings

You won't know what you're missing until you try

I'm a keen do-it-yourselfer and I also like looking for bargains. I have quite a large selection of different instruments and they all seem to be about the same quality. The main difference I see with rosettes is how they indicate size: painted (which can be removed with solvents), laser engraved, or stamped. Neither has ever been a problem for me, so I usually aim for 6 points so the fasteners can be squeezed with a little more confidence. I first used a Wera screwdriver when an engineer came from Germany to help with the inverter. at work. The etched tip grips the screws much more securely, so I bought a set right away. Screws that look visibly worn can be reused with these screwdrivers. They were definitely worth it, but who pays over $50 for allen wrenches? Then there were Allen keys, because who doesn't have money to burn? Anyway, I'm impressed every time I use them. I always thought the Allen key that comes with cheap furniture, toys and curtain rods would do, but the problem was the Chinese set screw. After using Wera wrenches on what I thought was a stripped set screw on my RC boat, I believed in them too, and the ball end on the other end made it much easier to get into tight spaces. I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to rework the end after it was removed to get a fresh hex head, but it turned out that with better tools there was no need to refill the tip. Okay now let's move on to reviewing this product and not my other Wera tools. A suitcase is a great solution for organization, it's easy to assemble and take with you on the road. The ratchet has a smooth and clean action with lots of teeth, allowing it to work in a much smaller rotational space. Where I usually need to prevent the socket from rotating backwards instead of clicking, it seems to know the direction I want to move with light loads (like trying to screw a fastener my hand can't reach ). The knurled end of the coupling can also help in tight spaces or make threading easier. I believe premium ratchets have more competition, so it's less of a game changer than their screwdrivers or allen wrenches, but still a noticeable improvement and worth the relatively high sticker price. I would say that the case is where the most added value comes from, as such an exquisite set is rarely enough to work with cars. I realized that if you use tools frequently and value your time, it's worth investing in better tools than snapped off bolt extractors. If you've found a deal for Wera and are thinking about it, just grab it. They don't come around often, and it could be a year before the price hits that mark again, if ever. Tools are a pass/fail element and they never fail where less expensive options consistently fail. Think of it as an investment in never having to deal with a stripped bolt in those sizes again instead of another set of double ratchets.
