This is a quality product. We didn't notice any strange smells. The product was packaged rolled and folded in half, but unrolled with no problems. The seller included instructions for use with the product. It has a rubberized, grippy material on one side and a soft wool material on the other. Instructions are to use handle side down on hard surfaces and wool side down on carpets. Worked great for us and stayed in place for a week with 4 kids playing every game imaginable on the new carpet. It is not particularly thick and not particularly soft, but the rather thin carpet feels good and does not slip on the floor. A note for future buyers: the documentation that came with the product states that if you know the exact dimensions of your rug, you can contact the seller to have your rug cut. We ended up cutting ours (which was easy) as we didn't have a rug when we ordered the rug. However, we hope this information will be useful for those who know exactly what size they need.
