Something so simple needs to be learned. You can see that in the one star ratings. A five-star reviewer mentions slight strokes. So I left scratches on my knife and didn't hit the edge. I got reasonably good results with more pressure, but the damage (admittedly minor) was already done. I don't rule out spending the money on a new knife, although it's not really necessary because so far I've avoided damaging or scratching it. I can try it on old knives, I don't care because it works if you do it right, but I'll never touch my best knives. I don't want to be unfair and it might deserve more than three stars, but replacing a knife I should never have tried on could cost me more than the purchase price. But it seems like a waste. Things happen.
