Review on πŸ”© Durable and Versatile Complete Doweling Dowel Pins Version - Perfect for Precise Joinery by Robert Long

Good idea but hard to achieve precision edge joining

After looking at different pin setters I settled on a fairly economical version as it could potentially be used for both edge joining and end joining. Unfortunately, using it isn't as easy as you might think. If you try to drill through the edge of the board, the template won't stay in place no matter how hard you press it against the board; Torque from a hand drill will always win here and cause hesitation unless you can somehow use a drill, which is unlikely in most situations. A side effect of this reluctance to drill is holes that are too large, causing the anchor to be too loose. This would not be a major problem were it not for the recommended procedure for setting the joint gauge. Here you use the position of the dowels in the first board to set the depth between the jig's stop and the guide bush. , which normally automatically centers the holder for the second plate. You guessed it, because the dowel in the first board is loose and the jig wobbles when you drill it, the holes in the second board won't be well centered; If you don't use this jig's auto-centering feature, you might be able to do the job a little better. You can possibly pinch it when drilling face holes. Other self-centering devices cannot be used for this procedure, making this version more versatile. It might be worth using both a self-centering jig (like the Dowl-it 1000 Self-Centering Dowel Jig) and this one.
