I didn't really think about it, just went with what the folks in the store recommended (and they were right). Strongly suggest a tire of the highest quality. I haven't put a lot of miles on it yet, but it drags fine on new snow, and the stopping distance doesn't seem to have changed from the summer. You have to be careful because it does move around a bit when eating cereal. So, I opted for 4. In comparison to the prior set of studded tires, I did not experience any noise. One of you has probably been compared to Velcro.
