Very soft material. I like that the parts can be easily stowed in the zippered compartment. The board doesn't lay flat because the material is very soft and it curls up on itself, I usually weigh it down on one side as you can see. Personally, I only use a chessboard/chess board and pieces, so I turn it inside out with that board. It seems to be working a little better. It comes with a black game board storage bag. On the one hand the pieces are easy for checkers, on the other hand they have a chess pattern. Overall it works well for my family.
