Review on πŸ’ͺ Enhance Performance and Durability with Oregon 49-241 Carburetor Float Bowl Assembly Repair Kit: The Perfect Lawn Mower Replacement Part by Mitchell Norman

Don't expect it to work right away (and have a fire extinguisher handy!)

Let me upfront by saying I'm not a beginner in mechanics and I'm not new to working on a carburetor. My Craftsman lawn mower had an issue that caused me to fill it up, it started and then died after a few seconds. Cleaning the carburetor and replacing some o-rings didn't help so I bought this kit. After installation, the problem persisted, but now it was even very difficult to fill it. I disassembled the carburetor again, removed the bowl and found that the float, needle and seat were extremely poorly designed. If the bowl is empty, the needle will not direct fuel into the carburetor, and there is no way to adjust the height of the needle. I ended up having to reuse my bowl and replace all the parts I could with a new one (of which there weren't many as most of the parts are completely different). Eventually I got to the point where the mower would start and run fine for about a minute, then gas would start coming out of the air filter unit and before it was over my mower would burst into flames. In short, this kit is rubbish and I wish I could spend the money I spent on it on a new mower that I need to make anyway. Update - I decided to try rebuilding my mower from the ashes which meant I had to figure out why this kit wasn't allowing gas to flow into the bowl. I heated and carefully flexed the tab holding the needle to the float and I managed to get her to lift the needle out of its seat, but she still wouldn't let gas into the bowl. It turns out that the needle fits so tightly in the brass seat that removing it from the seat is useless as the gas cannot get past the needle. I ended up sanding flat surfaces on both sides of the needle and now it works like a champ. Still a damn design and I spent about $50 on parts to rebuild my roasted mower but at least it works.
