I wanted an emergency backup heat source in case of a winter power outage, generator and/or furnace malfunction. The install was easy. You just need a basic knowledge on how to use pipe wrenches, GAS RATED thread sealant tape or "pipe dope" to ensure no gas leaks. I would suggest a friend or contractor you trust to install the gas line if you have no experience with pipe thread. The mounting bracket provided to wall mount this unit as I did is simple and effective. For the natural gas supply I went rigid (non-flex) pipe all the way. I used black iron as is code in our area instead of the yellow corrugated stainless steel tubing, chrome or brass except for the 1/2 inch valve. Not the most attractive but I am more into practical, economical and safe vs decoration or the easiest "lazy man" method. It has a pilot light that has to be on 24/7 in order to use it as a main heat source to self cycle on and off. However, if you decide to use it only in emergencies as I intend to, just turn off the valve on the top, turn off your gas valve on the supply line and it will sit there dormant until you are ready to utilize it. Lighting the pilot is super easy when you wish to use the heater. It has an electronic ignition that uses one AAA battery. If you are able to light a grill or a gas water heater you will have no problem. Lastly, I have been running it for many hours continuously for testing. It has not activated any of my Co (carbon monoxide) detectors, both new and hardwired and it heats the 12x16 living room and the 10x16 kitchen/dining area. It was 24 degrees Fahrenheit (-4 degrees Celsius) outside but the heater cycled on and off to easily get this area up to 80 degrees F (27 degrees C) during my "curiosity" testing and Co testing. I was uncomfortably warm so I turned it off. This was on the setting of "3" and the dial goes up to 5. I would HIGHLY recommend this as an emergency or supplementary heat source with no cons. They offer an optional electric blower fan that installs inside the unit to help circulate heat which I do not have yet. Thinking about it. My Mother came for a visit after I installed the heater back in October. I gave her a demonstration of how it radiates heat and how you feel it almost instantly from a distance. she fell in love with it and now she wants one. She wears a sweater in the middle of summer. I am buying a second heater for her FROM THIS SELLER soon and will be installing it for her. I also highly suggest soap testing every gas line connection at the very least AND/OR get your hands on a gas leak detector or "sniffer." I just happen to own one of my own. I included the sniffer (not included) in the photos.
