These are good general speakers. If you want theatrical sound, you need to spend at least $50 and find enough space on and/or under your desk. These little fellows, on the other hand, fit almost anywhere and produce a relatively rich sound given their small size. I was just looking for an update for my laptop's built in speakers and this is exactly what I need. They're small enough to fit in my backpack and I can just plug them into my laptop to be fully self-powered with minimal wiring. spend time with some noisy people. The maximum volume is much higher than the normal conversation tone. I would say two or three times louder. You could easily hear them in a noisy, crowded restaurant if they were on your table. They have a built-in sound card and volume control, so make sure they're turned all the way up. You'll also need to adjust the volume in your media player AND the Windows volume mixer, otherwise you won't get full volume. All in all, a very well thought-out speaker set. Hope they last because so far they are GREAT for the price.
