Review on πŸ”§ IRWIN VISE-GRIP Original Locking Pliers/Sheet Metal Tool, 8-Inch (23): Unparalleled Versatility and Precision by Cesar Carter

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The problem with the concave cheek plate is considered. . .

As many reviewers have noted, this Irwin tool is prone to problems with concave jaw plates. My first from Revain did the same thing. It was so bad that it took full vise force to fully close the panels. Not good. The outer part of the jaw plate digs into the object before the center closes. They leave scars when working with soft material such as aluminum gutters or trim. Not to mention the fact that you had a cocked spring in your hands. I sent it back to Revain for a replacement. In anticipation of a replacement, I decided to do a little research. In total I managed to learn 5 new tools. All had concave jaw plates. The amount of concavity is measured from approximately 1/32 inch to 1/8 inch. Oddly enough, the degree of concavity alone does not determine the amount of pressure required to fully close the jaw plates. The metal plates seem to have different hardness/thickness or shape. My guess is that the concave plates are there to even out the middle point of pressure on the Vise-Grip pliers. Revain's replacement worked great. Just a little pressure and the panels close completely. Handy tool. I like and recommend the working version.
