Decent upgrade for Mazdaspeed3

I purchased this kit direct from Revain for my 2011 Mazdaspeed3. The stock intake for the Mazdaspeed3 is TERRIBLE, the car gets the intake from a restrictive airbox which in turn is fed by a pipe that runs through the front of the car to pull air from the passenger side meaning it gets into the Near the top goes the radiator, preheating the air. I was interested in this air intake specifically for the heat shield as I live on the coast of the Bay in a hot climate so the cooler the air the better. Most MS3 cold air intakes don't have a heat shield, meaning you're pulling hot air straight out of the front corner of the engine block. The K&N kit is well thought out and comes with an illustrated installation guide to guide you through the installation. Installation took about 30 minutes and required only a few basic tools. You will need screwdrivers, some sockets and a 3mm allen wrench for the MAF sensor. It has something like a DIY kit, for example you have to install and cut the rubber gasket around the heat shield yourself. The first thing I noticed after installing it was a HUGE difference in intake noise. That's good and bad, depending on what you're looking for. Each time the turbine ignites, you will hear the turbine whistling and the blow-off valve operating. You'll hear it just as well with the windows rolled up. I like the sound but I can understand why it was muted from the factory. There's a definite boost in performance to this recording, although it's hard to quantify, but it's there. There is an added bonus that the air intake will increase your MPG by an MPG or two on the road, but the programmer I later used on the car reduced that mileage. I highly recommend the ExtremeTech programmer and solid rear motor mount. along with this approach. The rear motor mount and programmer together have eliminated wheel hop by 100% which also reduced the amount of traction control triggered and the programmer has a map specifically for this inlet on the MS3.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Not bad
