I received this as an open box. All I can think of is that the boxed instructions were for the Forester and Outback and showed the wiring harness connector under the rider's trunk Covering the rear shock absorber with a replacement. It's really under the plastic trunk lid, almost behind the driver's rear turn signal. The plug was plugged in directly and worked perfectly. So if you have an XV, remove the center rear plastic panel and look at the left angle on the driver's side, it's tucked right there.
