Snap-on scanner can diagnose sensors. The Troubleshooting menu provides advice on codes. The MAP sensor can cause an overly rich mixture and black smoke uphill. The TPS or a defective canister purge valve can create a vacuum in the EGR system at idle, causing a rough idle or engine stall. Disconnect the EGR hose and see if the idle improves. A bad MAP sensor can contaminate spark plugs and oxygen sensors. If the code says both 02 sensors are rich then it is a rich mixture. A bad ACT sensor can cause fluctuations. E-Bay has snap-on scanners and adapters.
