I have a microscope calibration ruler with divisions every 0.005 inch. I took a photo and cropped it to show the three lines on the ruler. On a 7-inch screen, the lines were about 0.260 inches apart. 0.260 / 0.005 = 52 so I would say the optical magnification is about 52x. Of course, if you connect a big screen HDMI monitor, you could qualify for a higher number. There's a 16x digital zoom capability, so the combination is 832x. But when you apply such a strong digital zoom, the picture becomes very grainy and noisy. I don't think the digital zoom will be very useful at the highest levels - it will be difficult to see detail. Another way to look at this is to notice that there are about 230 pixels between the lines of the image I'm drawing. captured such that each pixel is approximately 21 microinches wide at maximum optical magnification (0.005/230 = 0.000021). Overall I think this is a great product for the price but don't expect to get useful 1200x magnification. Increase.
