Review on CDN IRM190 Ovenproof Meat Thermometer by Jaclyn Laws

Good thermometer after calibration

I like the fact that this thermometer can be used in the oven/grill and that it has a glass lens. However, I quickly found that it wasn't very accurate out of the box. Having bought two different models of this type of thermometer, I once put both in a piece of meat and got a 30 degree variant. This is not good. I was about to ask for a refund when I noticed the 'boil test' mark on the front of the thermometer dial. The lightbulb lit up. I put a pot of water on the stove to boil and then dipped the thermometer into the boiling water. The dart has not reached the "boil test" point. Using a small wrench or pliers, while holding the hex nut on the back of the dial, I slowly rotated the thermometer's head until the needle lined up with the "boil test". I double checked in boiling water to confirm and I'm done. Now the thermometer works exceptionally well and is very accurate compared to my electronic thermometer. Too bad that setup information wasn't printed in big letters on the front of the box.
