Your SSD may require you to plug an SSD slot adapter directly into the USB 3.0 port of a Windows PC with nothing in it and flash the firmware from the RetroFlag website. After that, you may need to use the internal USB 2.0 port to boot from the SSD. I verified that there was no noticeable performance hit in RetroPie by running the popular blissful 512GB USB 2.0 image inside the case. My SSD was Samsung 860 500GB. The case itself is amazing and looks exactly how you want it to look and feel. The power buttons on the front work perfectly. They even click like they should. Everything about it looks great. Even the SSD cartridge feels premium. It includes 2 metal standoffs with Raspberry print for CPU and RAM under the fan. The impression really helps keep the thermal paste in place. I then used the standoffs that came with my GPU and USB controller. I'm overclocked to 2147 Hz and my case felt cold with the N64. The RetroFlag safe shutdown script is not compatible with RetroPie. It will close without saving the metadata. You can flip the switch inside the case to the off position and turn it off from the pause menu in RetroPie.
