THEY WORK. WITH A LITTLE LUB AND TIME TO MAKE THEM

Love the fact that I got a set of piercing glands for $11. These are NOT punches. They can be made to cut relatively thick leather, 4-5mm thick, but when finished they are only good for marking stitch holes. To use it for cutting leather up to 6mm thick, the sharpness and surface finish of the teeth are insufficient. I decided to invest $11 in these tools despite the bad ratings (or rave reviews) knowing I would try to polish the surface of the teeth and see if the steel would hold up to a razor blade. This decision was an easy one for the retiree compared to investing 20 to 40 times more in a reputable professional injection kit. In total I spent about 6 hours gradually grinding each of the 4 surfaces of each tooth on each of the 4 irons. Grit 220/320/400/600/800/1000, wet sanded and polished on a buffing wheel. And finally tightening the razor belt to leave very sharp and well polished teeth. The irons then effortlessly cut through tough vegetable-tanned leather. If you use common sense when removing the iron from the leather, i.e. placing something like a bone fold next to the prongs, pressing and aging the leather along the seam line and pulling the tool straight out, you won't bend or break. Teeth. Rocking the iron back and forth to loosen it from thick skin will bend or break the prong. After all, they work. If you're retired and making $0 an hour, buying these little spikes makes sense. If you make $45 an hour. and feel that your time and effort is better invested working on your leather project, pass it on and order professional French piercing irons at $100-$200 each. No, the teeth on these irons are not perfectly spaced at 4mm, but close together on 3 and 5 tooth irons. The interval is wider at 2 teeth of the iron. It's perfect, albeit on a prong 😊. In this case you get what you pay for. Much luck!
