I tried. I sent the first one back and then the second one came back for the same reason. In either case, the top extension will not securely lock into the fully extended position. I needed this rod to remove a broken lamp (it doesn't have a standard screw base and requires a detachable taper rod). In order for you to be able to push up the broken lamp base and then twist the rod to remove it, all parts of the extension rod must be firmly snapped into place. Neither bar I received did this. It may have been a bad production run, but it was certainly a disappointing one.
