Slightly less than 5 stars

The EatSmart Precision Elite digital kitchen scale is a very good product. I use it daily, often multiple times a day. It's extremely easy to use and has a low, sleek design that's just as easy to clean. The tare function is great and the ability to toggle between ounces, grams and pounds is quick and extremely useful. As long as it works for at least a few years, I'm very happy with the price (somewhere between $35 and $40). But it's not perfect, and I've noticed a few things I don't like about it. Scale. I can live with that, no problem, but in a perfect world... When you turn it on, it goes through a 3 second countdown before you can use it. It feels like an eternity trying to weigh 60 grams of pistachios. The display is difficult to read unless you look directly at it, as if it has a privacy filter. The power button must be held down. about 2 seconds until the device turns off. I know it's because this button is a duplicate of the tare button and I know the scale has an auto shutoff, but I would have preferred a dedicated on/off button. Ounces are rounded to the nearest 0.05 oz; Grams are rounded to the nearest gram. I would have liked a slightly more accurate reading: hundredths of an ounce and tenths of a gram. (Perhaps this is a limitation for higher capacity scales of a few pounds, as I know many shipping scales have 0.2 pound increments.) The pound mode measures up to 0.002 pounds, but I really only used the ounce and gram modes. (Obviously, if you bake a lot and need more accurate measurements for less weight, a scale with a smaller weight capacity would be a better choice.) Sometimes the scale turns itself on. No seriously. One day I turned on the light in my kitchen with a chain and the scales also caught fire. I wasn't next to him. It also sometimes happens when I lift the scale or push it sideways without pressing the power button. I suspect it's static sensitive since it's a dry winter. I'm wondering if the increased humidity limits the scales' ingestion on its own? Or maybe my house needs to be exorcised. Okay, I'm done with the sophistry. As I said, these are minor issues. Overall, the EatSmart Precision Elite digital kitchen scale is a very good product and I would highly recommend it.

Pros
  • The tare function resets the weight of a bowl or container and the auto shut off function after 3 minutes extends battery life
Cons
  • Clarity
