My old factory starter finally broke on an 89 F350 IDI 7.3 so I ordered it as a replacement. Ordered, installed, the truck started great. It used to sound like an old 6v tractor but with this new starter it sounded fast and quick like a motorcycle. Probably the 4th or 5th time I tried to start the truck I had to turn the ignition key over and over, click-click-click. stuck in a parking lot. The Bendix drive on this device started to jam/stick, as did the starting magnet jam/jammed in the housing. Options were to send this back, order another. or order it from Ford with warranty and guaranteed labor/installation. After considering the weight of the starter/return costs compared to the cost of a guaranteed starter and loss of time. I decided to discard this block as the main block. I believe this quick failure like burrs/metal shavings in the solenoid would have been found on quality control/testing before this starter was stored/sold if it had only been bench ridden on its own a few times. I'm not sure if this is part of the rebuilding process and I understand that not everyone can get things 100% 100% right, but I'm leaving 2 stars since the starter I received was in one Form was that he was was only good for returning the core (the labor involved in rebuilding outweighs the cost of a locally sourced guaranteed starter). If I could be more DIY oriented I would still buy one of these starters online but test them out more thoroughly myself before installing them.
