After spending $250 to replace the chain and cassette last year, I decided to do it myself. Get a small cassette eject tool for about $25, a new cassette for $30, and a chain for $30, and the best part is that it really takes about 20 minutes to get everything ready Even if you don't really know what you're doing. I've done several rides totaling maybe 100 miles or so with this cassette on my Cannondale mountain bike and it works flawlessly. We've got pretty flat here so I don't need bigger cassettes so the range works well.
