Beautiful D/A converter

I read reviews and almost bought this converter. My Zenith stopped working and I had to replace it. Since it was so cheap I changed my mind and bought two. This review applies to both boxes I bought. Turning on is a bit slow. The channel switching speed is decent. The image quality is good, but when you zoom in (4x3) you don't see the very edges of the image, unlike my other converters. The sound levels are low, but at the highest settings they are close to the level of my Magnavox transducer. Please use an RCA connection, not coaxial, otherwise you will not get full sound and will also hear some hissing (as many other reviewers have noted). Reception is ok. It's better than my RCA but not as good as my Magnavox and Zenith. I had no problem with channel settings being lost after the box was turned off (standby). I read in another review that if you get a version with a rectangular power supply instead of a square one, you may have a later version that fixes this (mine is 03/09). a little hot but not so hot that I couldn't touch it (I've had it for a few hours). Seems hotter than my other brands. The Access HD has plenty of ventilation openings on the top, sides and bottom. My Magnavox only has a tiny air slit in the back and hardly gets warm. As for the remote control, I got the 1080D version (special remote control). I have purchased two Philips universal remotes (one large and one smaller) and have successfully programmed both to work with the Access HD box. The larger universal remote control from Philips does everything the original remote control does, except audio switching and signal level display. The smaller Philips doesn't have them, except for the aspect ratio button (4x3 compared to broadcast settings). I read in the reviews that the remote control stopped working. At least I can then use the generalists without a few features. It's not a full-featured set-top box, but if you just want to keep using your old NTSC TV, this is a good converter.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Packaging is ugly
