This is a neat little napkin holder that is definitely different from your run-of-the-mill variety seen in so many homes. The holder is nicely sanded with no rough spots and it comes with little rubber pads on the bottom to keep it from sliding on the dining table.My assumption with the arm is that it's designed to hold the napkins down, but as it is new out of the box, the arm has a tendency to not drop after it's been lifted off the napkins. I worked the arm several times and it does seem to loosen it up a bit. The arm itself does have some minor blemishes, but a light rubbing with dish soap made it go away.All in all, I like how it compliments the overall look of my dining table. It beats having a stack of napkins just sitting on the table themselves.
