More than bearable, but a little more

Buy when you need it. It works exactly as intended and the declared properties are fully consistent with reality. Since this is a DisplayPort KVM, your experience should be better than expected, assuming every connected device works. I regret not upgrading my hardware a few years ago. As with any similar IOGEAR product, the build quality is better than expected. It definitely doesn't feel cheap. Smaller cable ends and ports than previous technologies like DVI mean the entire unit is significantly smaller in comparison, which was a welcome change from my 8-port DVI KVM. expensive (which I think is partly due to the fact that DisplayPort components cannot be daisy chained easily). And it works, except for the display itself, but that's an easy fix with a couple of cheap DisplayPort extenders and a willingness to switch which switch handles the video output when I switch to my less frequently used devices. To be honest, I still get a bit annoyed by the price of devices with more ports. Can they cost four figures and still be affordable for consumers in my situation? Probably because the convenience factor - not to mention actually having 8 ports instead of losing one by daisy-chaining another switch - outweighs the added cost compared to ordering two of them. Does that convenience justify paying nearly four times what this particular 4-port box does? Of course not. My only complaint, which I gave one star for, is the stupid cables that come with this product. So far, IOGEAR has supplied matching KVM cables, combining two audio cables, one USB cable and one display cable into one unit. Not here. And to make matters worse, the included cables aren't even remotely long. If you need a KVM switch at all, you're already dealing with a bunch of cables, and IOGEAR's choices for that matter are confusing at best. It looks like someone from the product department phoned in with this decision. What gives? General recommendation: do you need it? Buy it. This is very gratifying despite the problems described.

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Expensive
