Hardware upgrade

As mentioned the uprights attach to the crossbars with quick release rods and knurled nuts. This is definitely a security hazard and although the racks themselves have decent keyed locks, it would be a minor hassle for a thief to simply undo the clamps and escape with your gear AND your racks. A few bucks at the hardware store. and you can replace the knurled screws with lock nuts (6mm, thread pitch 1.0) and replace the quick release completely. For this I used 2" 10-24 hex head bolts with locknuts and washers. This small upgrade will greatly improve the reliability of the cases, and it's especially worth it if you're going to be leaving them attached to the car all season. The steering racks also come with it Plastic knurled nuts (with threaded metal inserts) are attached to the clamps. While not a safety issue, it's also easy to replace with lock nuts so you don't have to worry about the knurled nuts loosening over time. The ones provided Screws also have a 6mm 1.0 thread pitch and I also added thumb washers there to better distribute the clamping force of the screw.
