i had a mistake and it failed so the output voltage rose to the input voltage. Poorly.

So I bought 10 of these with pretty low expectations. My expectations were not met. Short version - the input voltage was too high (totally my fault) and it failed. The problem is that if it failed it would have boosted the output voltage to the input voltage which would probably smoke whatever is connected to its output. And it's BAAAAAD. And it's just unacceptable. So one star for you Mr. Voltage Regulator (not really) I ran them with a remote solar system but solar doesn't like snow, batteries don't like cold and honestly I'm not thrilled about seeing our mountain in 3 feet of snow at 5am to climb to clean the snow from the solar panel. control panel and start the generator. In the end I broke down and decided to connect the power from the well to it. Mileage about 1500 feet. This is wildfire country, so I'm not going to do anything that might cause a significant spark if a rodent chews through the cord. So 120 VAC was missing. However, I needed a voltage high enough to have some leftover at the end of 1500 feet of 16GA cable, so I settled on a 48VDC power supply. My total load is less than 20 watts and I was able to crank the PS down to 43V so I figured I had about a 6 volt drop under load and a voltage below 40V - I know. In any case, to my great surprise, I had about 43V with no load at the end of 1500 feet of cable, so I decided to give it a try and see what happens. since the supply voltage would probably drop below 40V once I loaded it. sooo I had a tractor LED headlight that drew about 0.5 amps at 13.5 volts so I set the converter to 13.5 volts and plugged in the light. For a few minutes it seemed to work fine. The input voltage dropped to around 35V, which is to be expected, and while the regulator was warming up it didn't smoke or anything. . I was surprised because the LED bulb was still working fine, so it should have its own internal regulator, but it was definitely coming out 35 volts and I started smelling "you just did something wrong". In any case. I fried it. It was my fault. I knew there was a good chance I'd fry it if I did what I did, but I bought 10 of these, so no big deal. fail in such a way that full input voltage is passed and likely fry whatever is at the output. Well it's just not acceptable and that's why it gets one star because I wouldn't use it in any situation where this device is power critical, expensive or difficult to replace.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Doubtful
