Review on Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens by Mateusz Gsiewski ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I did not regret the purchase, everything is fine.

I'll start with the bad: for some reason, kenon decided to change the plastic both in the EOS R itself and in the lenses, visually and tactile I like it much less than the previous one. In operation, it proved to be worse, scuffs are already visible on the matte surface. The next claim to the constructive, in the area of the focusing ring, the plastic bends from an average effort, why it was done this way is not entirely clear. Although the network has a detailed disassembly of the RF50L and it shows that everything inside is done quite soundly and at a new technical level. Could hold on to this quality and appearance, it's a shame. The second and main complaint about the drawing: basically fifty dollars are taken just because of the convenient focal length and interesting pattern in the bokeh, with partial preservation of details. So the pattern in the new RF50L exactly repeats the trend that can be seen on the example of the EF35L and EF35LII. The bokeh of the RF50L has become smoother, the chromaticity has disappeared, the highlights in the bokeh have become smoother. Did it do any good? Partly. I can’t say that the bokeh is bad either. In the medium and distant plans, it even seems to me to become more oily, the "bounce" in the foliage has gone. But the neighbors lost that individuality for which they loved the EF version. But the volume of the RF version draws better, the selection of the main object is still smooth, but the sharpness in the center has benefited. Especially felt on subjects with a calm background. We fixed all the main complaints about EF - increased the focusing speed, removed the XA almost completely, made it incredibly sharp right from the open. The RF version detects faces and eyes faster. The design with EOS R looks very harmonious at fifty dollars, the weight distribution is still comfortable. Is it worth 160tr? For commerce, you can take Sigma Art (but put up with its unsuccessful weight distribution and dimensions), for individual EF50L bokeh. I can’t recommend RF for its high price, probably for brand fans like me, who have a fifty-fifty main glass. During the summer months, RF begins to fall in love with himself, forcing him to notice in small things that he has become better.

Pros
  • - Ringing sharpness - High aperture - Focus speed - Pure colors
Cons
  • - Have questions about bokeh - There are complaints about the quality of plastic - High price
