Review on Cold Air Intake Kit Performance Replacement Parts best: Filters by Jeremy Gorsage

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Nice system but slight design flaws

Purchased for a 2013 Mustang V6. Equipped with a cold air intake duct from the grille area (in front of the radiator), the Mustang works well with this kit, which uses the same intake duct as the air source. I chose this cold air kit because it doesn't have the clunky open layout offered by the K&N competitors that use a weatherstrip to connect the open air box to the underside of the hood. I would imagine the interface between the airbox and cowl leaves worn marks on the cowl and cowl insulation over time, with torn cowl insulation falling into the airbox and filter on a daily basis. Maybe I'm too picky. Installation was easy, but some of the mounting holes had to be enlarged to ensure a good fit with other parts. Take a small rat tail file or a dremel tool. Also, one of the ribbon ties included in the kit doesn't match the others - I'm a big fan of putting things like this together just for looks. Probably nobody but me will notice this small mistake. Finally, an unused fitting (for this Mustang) in the aluminum air tube needs to be plugged, and K&N supplies a plastic plug, but it doesn't look very strong. Unfortunately, the weld sleeve for this connection is slightly deformed (possibly from welding) and the steel pipe plug will not fit. I can purchase a correct size NPT elbow, remove the air hose and clean the threads to fit a metal pipe plug of the proper size. Again maybe too picky. I believe these kits offer a power/torque improvement, but only in the upper RPM ranges, so I can't tell you that I experienced an amazing increase in acceleration. The K&N setup offers a wonderful under-the-hood sound enhancement when you put your foot on it. There is no noticeable increase in engine noise while driving. Also, when you open the hood, this kit looks great with a polished aluminum air tube and a sleek carbon fiber airbox cover with a sculpted K&N logo. The stock filter and the lines it replaces just looked ugly. Bad cosmetics there, Ford engineers. Generally a good body kit with some design flaws. Add it to your list to compare with others. You certainly won't regret choosing K&N.
