These nuts literally bite into the nut, the downside is they usually deform it into an unusable shape (so expect it to be replaced), the upside is the bite provides a lot more grip than a regular nut. If you've overtightened a nut, regular sockets will lose grip before they reach the torque needed to loosen them, but these don't.
